What is a rego inspection?
A rego inspection, also known as an eSafety check or pink slip, is a safety inspection required for certain vehicles before they can be registered or re-registered in states like New South Wales. The goal of a rego inspection is to ensure the vehicle is safe to operate on public roads. During the inspection, a licensed mechanic checks critical systems including brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, lights, seatbelts, windscreen wipers, and fluid levels. If the vehicle passes, the mechanic electronically sends a report to Transport for NSW, allowing the owner to complete their registration. If it fails, the owner is given a rejection report outlining the repairs needed before a follow-up inspection can be booked. Not all vehicles need a pink slip every year, but it becomes mandatory once the vehicle reaches a certain age—typically five years or older.
How long is a rego inspection valid for?
A rego inspection (pink slip) is valid for 42 days from the date it is issued. This means you must complete your vehicle’s registration within that time frame, using the same inspection result. If you do not register the vehicle within the 42-day period, you’ll need to have it inspected again and obtain a new pink slip. The 42-day validity applies to passed inspections only; if the vehicle fails the check, you’ll need to have the necessary repairs completed and the vehicle re-inspected—typically within 14 days—before a new report can be issued. This time limit helps ensure that a vehicle’s condition hasn’t changed significantly between the inspection and the time of registration.
What do they check in a rego inspection?
During a rego inspection, a licensed mechanic checks all major safety components of the vehicle to ensure they meet legal roadworthiness standards. This includes brake system condition and responsiveness, tyre tread depth and wear, suspension and steering function, lighting and electrical systems, seatbelt integrity, windscreen condition, and windshield wipers. The inspector will also check under the bonnet for fluid levels and leaks, confirm the horn is working, and ensure that number plates are secure and legible. For trailers and light trucks, specific components such as tow couplings and brake lights are also checked. If any issues are identified that pose a safety risk, the vehicle will not pass the inspection until those items are repaired and re-assessed.
